12:31 am - XF round!

thete1
The stories for this round are:

Devil In A New Dress by Anna S.

Partners by Sylvia.

A Routine Interrogation by Lyrica.

The Long and Winding Road by Kassandra.

Blood of Angels by LoneGunGuy.

Hilt by Nonie Rider.

Since a lot of these are longer stories, and since I'm going away on Friday for a bit, I'm giving us a month. Post your reviews and discussion by June 30. (If this isn't enough time, I'll extend the deadline, but I want to keep things moving as much as possible.)

To make it easier to keep track of discussions, we're gonna try to keep everything in the same thread -- one thread per stories. If your reviews get too long (yum!), go ahead and open a new thread, though.

Questions?

If not, then let's get reading. *g*

*snerk* Right, I'm awake, aware, all that good stuff.

So, it's the beginning of the X-Files round. I know a lot of you wouldn't know a Mulder if he sat on your face, so y'all are excused.

For the rest of you... let's take a trip in the wayback machine, shall we?

The story I'm putting up for review is the story that cemented my behavior as an Anna stalker in my early years of fandom. Devil In A New Dress by eliade.

You?

When I get a sense of who all's participating and how many stories are being nommed (and how long they are), I'll choose a deadline.

4:36 pm - Kita reviews all!

Here Comes A Candle-

I chose this one. Mainly because I had to know if I was an idiot. If I am, clearly I am in good company. No one else got the story either, from what I can see. The term atmospheric was probably created for fic like this. And god knows it has atmosphere in spades. Also very tight prose and dialogue that makes my spine tingle. The problem of course is that it all adds up to a story NO ONE UNDERSTANDS. I actually emailed the author of this one to ask her what the frelling point was. She said, essentially, "Whatever you want it to be. Maybe I missed the mark?" Sigh. I liked the feel of it enough to post it on Campfire Tales, cause it *is* creepy. Unfortunately, it's also frustrating as fuck.

Fredful-

I wanted to like this one more than I actually did. I got too stuck in the meta, however, the cleverness of "look, Fred reads our DP series". And I don't mean that in a snarky way, because I know the authors and I love their brand of self referencing (and occasionally self efacint) humor. I just couldn't get *past* my knowledge of them and their other fics to really get into this story. Sort of like S4 AtS for me- I'd watch Cordy in a coma and think "gee, is she in a coma 'cause it fits the currently necessary story arc or merely 'cause CC is pregnant?" And stuff like that takes me right out of the story. So, well written, cute concept, didn't work for me peronsally.

Gifted-

Lar is one of those authors who can get inside a character's head and make me believe things about them I wouldn't ordinarily buy, even onscreen. Her Xander is tremendously sweet, Willowlusty, and a bit clueless in a way that really endears me to him. My only problem with this fic is that I think it could have been longer, and explored more in depth Xander's feelings toward the women in his life. God knows that's a huge well of untapped potential, so maybe that's just *my* need. Her Xandervoice is spot on though, not stuck in EarlyGoofy!Xander like many authors fall into, yet completely recognizable as a young adult Xander. A nice fic, not my favorite of Lar's however.

Winners-

EEEE! See, this is the one I was afraid to review because all I can say is EEEE! As far as creepy stories go, this has to win, hands down, and as the archivist of Campfire Tales, trust me that says alot. There is not one gratuitous word or scene, not one misstep, and the climax- well, climax is not an inaccurate term here, I'm just sayin'. I read this thing twice all the way through, because I couldn't believe she had done what she did. And did it flawlessly. Some of these images (Giles and the crosses, Spike still torn between two worlds) will stay with me for a long, long time. A classic in the horror genre. And have I said EEEEEEE??

Natural Blues-

One of the first Oz-as-not-necessarily-a-nice-guy fics I came across. Simple and effective, but like Lar's Gifted, I think I wanted to see more. The voice is great, but it skims along the surface of its potential. Her style is lyrical and lovely, and the flow is perfect. I woulda just liked to see more exploration of the idea. Although perhaps understated *was* the point, kind of like Oz himself. Hm.

11:40 pm - ADMIN: End of the Buffy round, etc.

thete1
Dude, it's been a crazy couple of weeks for all of us, so I'm pushing the end of this round to Monday. If you want to discuss, just open up a thread and get to stepping. Alternately, relax.

The next round will be for X-Files fic, so dig back through your memories to a time when it was all about Mulder and Krycek and Skinner and Scully and the Gunmen... damn, I'm feeling nostalgic. I'll do a post about the rules, time frame, whatever, on Monday.

What else? Hunh. Reply to this post if you have any ideas and suggestions on how to make this stuff go more smoothly. I want to make this as painless as possible.

Hell, It's 22:21. I just got up. I forgot the cut tags. Forgive me.

I did try to roust the TeBird outta bed to fix it for me, but that novel writing is bloody exhausting, and the dear one is kipping.

Still, it's the last day for posting reviews, so you'all will have done yours already, right?

Reading this gave a nice feeling of nostalgia and affection. I quite enjoyed the gentle memory-laneness of it.

The problem I have with this fic is that I have no feeling for Xander's WillowLust. Never have, and this didn't manage to give me any.

However, that didn't spoil my enjoyment of the lovely detailed descriptive writing which is one of the things I enjoy more in Lar's writing than many peoples. Wish there were bruises, she does good bruises...

I did enjoy this one. I was very much left with the feeling that it was a classic style horror short, with the unknown evil creeping slowly up on your blind side. The grimness of the job envoironment and the growing feeling of strangeness and isolation as we move out of the familiar and into creeps-ville were very effective.

Althought I thought that the characters were very well voiced, I almost felt that this could have been *anyone* in this situation. That this would have worked just as well as an original tale. Probably because the ultimate evil is unknown.

Nice touch with Xander going 'willingly' into the dark, grudging altruism and curiosity getting the better of him.

Good creepy read.

Really an excellent little tale. It felt very much like the show, little gags and tones of voice, with just a breath of something underneath and then a sudden dive from uncertainty to darkness with:

"We had no idea how far gone Giles was until we saw the crosses carved into his skin."

And there was no feeling of fishy misdirection when the unexpected denoument came. Just a brilliant creepy shiver. Bloody Excellent!
